Is James Hardie siding better than vinyl for a New Hampshire home?
Vinyl gets brittle in a January cold snap and a stray ladder or a hockey puck can crack a panel. Fiber cement is made of cement, sand and cellulose fiber. It shrugs off impact, it does not care about the freeze and thaw cycle, and it looks like painted wood from the curb because the texture is milled in, not printed on. The trade off is weight and installation skill, which is why the installer matters as much as the product.
How long does James Hardie siding last in New England?
Wood siding in this climate needs paint every five to seven years and still rots at the bottom course. Hardie boards do not absorb water the way wood does, so the paint bond holds and the board underneath stays sound. With ColorPlus the finish is warranted for 15 years against peeling and fading on its own. Most of the Hardie homes we sided in our early years still look the way they did the day we left.
What else should be done when the siding comes off?
We find the surprises when the old siding comes down: soft sheathing under a leaky window, a missing kick out flashing at the roofline, no house wrap at all on an older addition. Those get fixed before the new siding goes on, not covered up. Windows and doors installed at the same time are flashed into the new weather barrier correctly, which is something a separate window company working on a finished wall cannot do.
